Trouble with self discipline recently
Hi all, developed a strategy over the past 3 years, it’s sitting at 39.5% w/r at 7r target. It works I have trades it for the past 2 years or so on GA and Gold.
Anyway last year I was in full time employment, had my own business alongside that and also trading profitably. Business was not doing well so I left my job to focus on the business in Oct, closed the business in Dec, since then I have had to put a considerable amount of my own money into closing the business due to personal guarantees etc.
Now when I am trading I feel a pressure to make money and keep blowing my account, I know my risk management rules, but I can’t seem to stick to them and revenge/overtrade constantly.
Does anyone have experience with dealing with this?
My one idea is handing over my MT4 account to my other half who does not trade and passing her the signals when they show up, taking me out of the equation for now
Sometimes overtrading and revenge trading come from a desire to control the outcome, especially after taking financial pressure outside the market. When you need trading to fix something, discipline usually breaks. Your system seems solid, the challenge now is mental. Reducing size, stepping back, or even limiting trades per day can help bring that control back gradually.
This is normal for most traders, especially when there is financial pressure outside trading. It shifts your mindset from following a system to trying to make money quickly, which usually leads to overtrading. Handing over execution can help short term, but the real fix is reducing risk and stepping back until you regain control.
Well the direction is actually right. You’ve already identified the problem. It’s not the strategy, it’s the pressure behind it. When trading becomes a need instead of a process, discipline usually breaks. Maybe focus on lowering risk and expectations for now, just to get back into executing properly rather than trying to make money quickly.
Your strategy actually sounds solid, especially with a defined R:R like that. The issue doesn’t seem technical, it’s more the pressure you’re under right now. When trading turns into needing income, decision-making usually slips. Maybe reduce size or even step back a bit. Taking yourself out of execution could help short term, but rebuilding discipline is key.
