XAUUSD: 30 Yrs, Still Wary of This Setup
30 years trading gold. Seen it spike on fake news, dump on thin liquidity, and pretend to break out just to fade 80% of traders.
Right now (this week), what worries me isn’t the technicals. It’s how perfect the recent M15 structure looks on XAUUSD.
In my experience, when a pair starts behaving like a textbook for 2 weeks straight – clean support/resistance, obedient RSI, lovely backtests – that’s exactly when the market teaches humility.
A few principles that aged well:
1. Never trust a backtest without a session filter.Most EAs look brilliant until you isolate London open vs Asian drift. I still run 4 separate backtest windows by session.
2. Your best EA won’t be a “gold killer” – it’ll be a position sizer.I’ve built maybe 30 EAs over the decades. The only ones still running simply manage risk based on gold’s ATR volatility expansion. No entry logic.
3. Experienced traders don’t ask “will it go up?” – they ask “am I early or late?”That question alone killed my ego faster than any losing streak.
