According to Mike Waltz, the US Permanent Representative to the UN, one faction of the ‘Iranian regime’ is seeking to follow the instructions of Iran’s Supreme Leader, whilst others ‘wish to move in a different direction’. This greatly complicates the situation from a diplomatic perspective and makes it difficult to reach any reasonable settlement.
