South Korea Consumer Prices Rise 0.4% In January

(RTTNews) - Consumer prices in South Korea were up a seasonally adjusted 0.4 percent on month in January, Statistics Korea said on Tuesday - in line with expectations and up from 0.3 percent in December.

On a yearly basis, inflation climbed 2.0 percent - below expectations for 2.1 percent and easing from 2.3 percent in the previous month.

The index excluding food and energy increased 0.5 percent from the preceding month and rose 2.0 percent from the same month of the previous year. In December, prices were up 0.2 percent on month and 2.0 percent on year.

Bank Of Korea Hikes Key Rate For Second Straight Time

The Bank of Korea raised its benchmark rate by a quarter-point for the second straight meeting on Thursday, to prevent broadening of inflationary pressures. The Monetary Policy Board of the Bank of Korea voted 6-1 to raise the base rate by 25 basis points to 3.00 percent. The bank had lifted the rate by a quarter-point at the previous meeting in July.
