South Korea Has $9.56 Billion Surplus In September

(RTTNews) - South Korea posted a merchandize trade surplus of $9.56 billion in September, the Customs Office said in Wednesday's preliminary report.

That beat expectations for a surplus of $7.81 billion and was up from $6.51 billion in August.

Exports jumped 12.7 percent on year, exceeding forecasts for an increase of 7.2 percent following the 1.2 percent gain in the previous month.

Imports were up an annual 8.2 percent versus expectations for a gain of 5.6 percent following the 4.1 percent decline a month earlier.

The Bank of Korea raised its benchmark rate by a quarter-point for the second straight meeting on Thursday, to prevent broadening of inflationary pressures. The Monetary Policy Board of the Bank of Korea voted 6-1 to raise the base rate by 25 basis points to 3.00 percent. The bank had lifted the rate by a quarter-point at the previous meeting in July.
