South Korea Inflation Jumps 0.5% In September

(RTTNews) - Consumer prices in South Korea were up a seasonally adjusted 0.5 percent on month in September, Statistics Korea said on Thursday.

That was above forecasts for an increase of 0.4 percent following the 0.1 percent contraction in August.

On a yearly basis, inflation jumped 2.0 percent - again exceeding expectations for an increase of 2.0 percent and up from 1.7 percent in the previous month.

The Bank of Korea raised its benchmark rate by a quarter-point for the second straight meeting on Thursday, to prevent broadening of inflationary pressures. The Monetary Policy Board of the Bank of Korea voted 6-1 to raise the base rate by 25 basis points to 3.00 percent. The bank had lifted the rate by a quarter-point at the previous meeting in July.
