Does server ping actually matter for standard 15-minute EAs?
Hey guys, quick question regarding VPS location and latency. I have been running a basic breakout EA on the 15 minute timeframe. Recently I noticed that during the London open, a few of my market entries were delayed by around half a second, causing minor slippage on EUR/USD. I decided to test my network setup by running my charts alongside the brondesburyglobal desktop client on the same VPS instance to see if the lag was coming from my server connection or just order queuing during volume spikes. The ping itself was under 15ms, but execution still queued up right when the market moved fast.
How much latency do you typically tolerate for non scalping strategies? Do you bother moving your VPS setup closer to the trade server if you are not doing high frequency trading?
like my ea its need really low latency to get all the pips the latency are really needed for bot like breakout ea
For a 15M EA I wouldn’t stress too much about latency, if you’re already around 15 ms, I’d probably leave the VPS where it is. A 500 ms delay during news/market opens is more likely execution queuing than your VPS distance.
A 15ms ping is definitely low enough for a 15m timeframe EA. The half-second delay you are seeing at the London open probably isn't network lag at all. It is likely order book depletion. When volume spikes at the open, the liquidity at the top of the book gets eaten instantly by hundreds of other algorithms. What feels like a server delay is often just your market order traveling up the book to find the next available price. Since you already have the Brondesburyglobal client running on that VPS, I usually just keep the Level 2 DOM open on there during the London session. It makes it really easy to see the exact moment the liquidity drops out right as the EA triggers.
Have you considered tweaking your EA to use stop limit orders during the open to cap that slippage?
