Octa broker's bootcamp: free coding education for South Asian students

Octa broker conducted a free coding bootcamp in close cooperation with Ideas International, a secondary school providing high-quality, inclusive education. Held on-site between July and August 2025, the STATUS 200 2.0 bootcamp provided graduates with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to pursue an internship or junior position as a web developer.

Octa's bootcamp 2025: an overview

Octa broker and Ideas International delivered the STATUS 200 coding bootcamp for two consecutive years, in 2024 and 2025. Primarily serving refugees and Octa-affiliated students, this year's intensive programme provided comprehensive technical training through hands-on instruction and took place on a campus from July to August. 

In two years, the bootcamp's rigorous programme enabled more than 20 students to jump-start their coding journeys, picking up this profession from scratch. The programming skills acquired as a result of the bootcamp allow graduates to either pursue a career in a coding-related field or expand their skill set in another capacity. 

The 2025 bootcamp featured some improvements compared to the previous year's instalment. Consisting of two stages instead of three, STATUS 200 2.0 included 20 hours of study at Stage 1 as an introduction and testing phase, and 300 hours at Stage 2, which comprised the main bulk of intense learning. 

High-intensity programme

The high volume of theory and practice, compactly packed into less than two months between July and August, was a powerful incentive for students to give their best and rise to the challenge. As a result, out of 78 students who initially signed up for the bootcamp, 25 qualified for Stage 2, with 10 students completing the whole course and receiving certificates. 

The qualification criteria were stricter this time, with 100% attendance and homework completion required for students to progress to Stage 2. This approach ensured all Stage 2 participants possessed the baseline commitment and capability needed to maintain the programme's intensive pace. The organisers stated that certified graduates have genuinely mastered the skills and knowledge required to work in the industry and that their certification serves as a meaningful credential that employers can trust.

Applicable knowledge

The 10 students certified in 2025 successfully demonstrated mastery across the full technology stack: 

• HTML/CSS layout and design 
• JavaScript programming fundamentals 
• Node.js and Express server development 
• MySQL database design and queries 
• RESTful API implementation 
• complete full-stack integration. 

Their final webshop projects showcased functional e-commerce platforms with user authentication, product management, order processing, and database persistence.

The knowledge gained during the bootcamp is highly applicable. For example, 

Mohamad Alkhaled, a 2024 graduate, returned to the Ideas International campus in 2025 as a teacher and instructor for the second bootcamp.
