I would have loved to avoid having to publish this review but IC Markets is getting worse and worse.
I have been trading for a few decades and been a client of IC Markets for around 15 years. Unfortunately, my recent experience with IC Markets during the MT5 platform upgrade was extremely disappointing.
The MT5 upgrade took place during a period of exceptional market volatility due to geopolitical tensions involving Iran. This volatility was already present before the scheduled maintenance. In my opinion, the upgrade should have been postponed given market conditions.
IC Markets had clearly stated in previous emails that they would notify clients once the platform was fully operational again. However, no notification was sent at 02:00 server time when the system was supposedly restored. The confirmation email only arrived at 11:36 server time on March 1st.
As a result, I was unable to close my BTCUSD positions earlier. I was actively monitoring the situation and contacted support via chat and email requesting assistance to close my trades due to the extreme volatility. I received no effective help.
I finally managed to close my positions manually at 04:35 a.m. once I realised the server was working again — by then, the price had moved significantly against me.
To be clear, I am not claiming the full loss. I accept that losses were possible regardless. However, the losses were significantly increased due to:
- The timing of the platform upgrade.
- The lack of notification when services resumed.
- The refusal or inability of support to assist while the maintenance was delayed.
I requested that my BTCUSD positions be reviewed and adjusted to approximately $66,200, which is where I would reasonably have closed them had I received the promised notification.
The response I received denied any responsibility, which unfortunately did not surprise me.
Given the documentation I hold (emails and support chat transcripts), I will now escalate this matter to the appropriate regulators, including ASIC.
Very disappointing handling of what could have been resolved fairly.
