FOMC Today, ECB Tomorrow — Will GOLD Break Above $4,160 or Fall Below $3,950?
With the FOMC decision today, the ECB meeting tomorrow, and U.S. midterm elections next week, financial markets are entering a potentially turbulent period.
An important question remains: have markets already priced in most of the negative expectations, or is another wave of selling approaching?
Over recent weeks, global equity markets and GOLD have seen noticeable corrections. Gold briefly traded below the psychologically important $4,000 level, while major U.S. stock indices retreated from their early-October all-time highs. This week, however, some initial signs of stabilization have emerged.
What to Expect?
Central bank decisions — and, more importantly, their forward guidance — could determine market direction in the coming sessions.
A more hawkish Fed could strengthen the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields, potentially putting additional pressure on equities and GOLD. Less restrictive policy signals, by contrast, could support a recovery across financial markets.
Interestingly, GOLD has increasingly behaved like a risk-sensitive asset over the past year, occasionally moving alongside equities rather than acting as a traditional safe haven.
Nevertheless, following its recent correction, GOLD currently appears relatively attractive from a risk/reward perspective. Political uncertainty ahead of the U.S. midterm elections could also strengthen its defensive appeal.
GOLD (XAU/USD) — Technical Outlook
The technical picture remains cautiously bullish as long as GOLD holds above $3,950.
Key support: 3,950–4,000
This area represents a critical technical and psychological support zone. A sustained break below $3,950 could trigger another significant sell-off, particularly if accompanied by broader risk aversion.
Key resistance: 4,100–4,160
This is the first major obstacle for buyers. A convincing breakout above $4,160 could strengthen bullish momentum and open the way for further recovery.
With three major market-moving events approaching, increased volatility appears likely. However, part of the negative expectations may already be reflected in current prices.
If GOLD manages to hold above $3,950 despite potentially negative news, it could signal that selling pressure is weakening and buyers are regaining control.
The coming sessions could determine whether GOLD resumes its recovery or enters another phase of correction.
