S&P 500 Slumps Toward 7,350 as AI Sell-Off Erases Post-Election Gains

A 4.4% drop led by technology and semiconductor shares reversed Wednesday’s rally, with oil near $98 and Friday’s jobs report as the next test.

Key Takeaways

  • The S&P 500 fell 4.4% to 7,353.73 on 5 November, erasing Wednesday’s post-election gains.
  • The Dow dropped 3.4% to 51,523.06, while the Nasdaq Composite lost 5.5% to 24,315.
  • AI policy concerns hit technology shares after the Democrats’ congressional victory.
  • Oil, Treasury yields and Friday’s US jobs report could influence whether the selling continues.
  • Traders are watching 7,380–7,400 for a potential recovery and 7,300–7,310 for further downside risk.

US stocks plunged as heavy selling in AI and semiconductor shares spread across Wall Street. The decline reversed the optimism that followed the removal of election uncertainty, and attention now turns to whether buyers can defend the recent lows.

Why Traders Are Watching the S&P 500

The immediate focus is how a Democratic-controlled Congress could affect business investment, regulation and corporate earnings. Technology shares bore the brunt of the selling as investors questioned whether tighter oversight of AI infrastructure could weaken spending and earnings expectations. Concerns about data-centre development turned into a broader reduction in exposure to US equities.

The selling extended beyond large technology companies. The Russell 2000 fell 4.4%, and individual investors sold a net $265 million in US stocks, their largest daily net selling since 2020.

Oil adds another layer of uncertainty. Prices have recovered as investors monitor developments in Iran, with Brent near $98 per barrel and WTI around $90. Further gains could pressure corporate margins.

Key factors influencing the S&P 500’s outlook include:

  • US Non-Farm Payrolls (6 November): Whether resilient hiring and contained wage growth support stocks, or strong wages lift yields. October job cuts of 43,994 were the lowest October total since 2023, but that does not necessarily signal stronger permanent hiring.
  • AI and Semiconductor Shares: Whether technology selling stabilises or continues to weigh on index heavyweights.
  • Data-Centre Policy: Whether proposals prove less restrictive than feared, or concrete limits trigger further earnings revisions.
  • Oil and Iran: Whether prices ease, helping inflation and margins, or keep climbing.

Key Trading Levels

The S&P 500 remains weak after a sharp decline from around 7,700. Price is trading close to a falling nine-period moving average, and the latest bounce has yet to reclaim 7,400. Holding 7,300–7,330 would preserve the recent low, although a recovery remains unconfirmed.

A sustained hourly close above 7,380–7,400, followed by a successful retest, could open a move towards 7,450. Continued buying could then bring 7,480–7,500 into focus, with 7,550–7,600 as higher resistance.

However, a rejection around 7,380–7,400, followed by a sustained break below 7,300 that fails to reclaim the level, could expose 7,250. Further selling pressure could extend losses towards 7,200.

Bottom Line

The S&P 500’s direction depends on whether technology selling eases and whether Friday’s jobs data supports steady growth. Stable AI shares, clearer policy guidance and lower oil could help the index build a floor. Continued technology selling, tighter regulatory concerns or a jobs report that unsettles yields could keep sellers in control.

The euro is rising as oil and the dollar fall: eurozone inflation at 4% raises the odds of an ECB rate hike, while a cooling US economy gives the Fed a reason not to rush.
