Why Friday’s NFP Could Decide Gold’s Next Move After the Wall Street Sell-Off

Gold has rebounded about 6% from a one-year low, but Friday’s US jobs report could either extend the recovery or reverse it.

Key Takeaways

  • The US October Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) report is due on 6 November 2026 at 8:30 AM ET and could shape expectations for the Fed’s December meeting.
  • Gold has recovered to around $4,130 from a one-year low near $3,870, helped by a weaker US dollar, lower Treasury yields and falling oil prices.
  • Wall Street’s sell-off doesn’t automatically help gold, because investors can also sell gold to raise cash or meet margin calls.
  • Markets tend to react to the gap between expected and actual data, not the headline number alone.

Traders are weighing whether the 5 November sell-off, when the S&P 500 fell about 4.4% and the Nasdaq about 5.5%, will extend. Concerns over AI valuations, interest rates and political uncertainty drove the selling.

What Markets Expect from NFP

Economists forecast the following for October:

  1. Non-Farm Payrolls: 65,000, up from 29,000 previously
  2. Unemployment rate: 4.2%, unchanged
  3. Average hourly earnings (MoM): 0.3%, up from 0.1%

ADP private payrolls showed about 86,000 new jobs, above expectations, and low layoffs suggest the labour market may be holding up better than September’s figures implied. Wage growth, unemployment and revisions to September’s data could matter as much as the headline number.

Gold: Rebound Helped by Easing Pressure

  • US dollar and yields: The Dollar Index slipped towards a one-month low near 101, and the 10-year Treasury yield eased towards 4.9%.
  • Oil and inflation: Falling oil prices, on hopes of US-Iran diplomatic progress, have eased inflation worries.
  • Fed policy: Rates are at 3.75%–4.00%, with the next meeting on 8–9 December. Because gold pays no interest, higher yields raise the opportunity cost of holding it.

The rebound has not yet reversed the broader technical downtrend.

How Different NFP Outcomes Could Play Out

  1. Stronger NFP (above 100,000, with wages up 0.3% or more): Gold may come under renewed pressure as the dollar and yields recover, possibly exposing the $3,820–$3,870 demand zone again.
  2. In line (about 50,000–70,000): The reaction may be contained, and gold could consolidate below $4,220 while traders focus on September’s revisions.
  3. Weaker NFP (below 30,000, or unemployment above 4.3%): Gold could be supported towards $4,220, and a sustained break higher would bring $4,380 into focus.

Levels to Watch

  • $3,820–$3,870: Major demand zone and recent support
  • $4,220: Immediate resistance and the October ceiling
  • $4,380: Next upside resistance
  • $4,470: Resistance near the daily 200-period SMA
  • $4,660: Resistance near the August high

Until gold clears $4,220 and then $4,380, this is a rebound within a downtrend, not a confirmed reversal.

Bottom Line

Friday’s report may bring volatility, but gold is likely to respond most to the dollar, Treasury yields and Fed expectations rather than the payroll figure alone. Traders may gain more from watching how those markets react after the release than from trying to predict the number. Wider spreads and rapid price swings around the release also raise execution risk, so position sizing and risk management matter.

The euro has spread its wings

The euro is rising as oil and the dollar fall: eurozone inflation at 4% raises the odds of an ECB rate hike, while a cooling US economy gives the Fed a reason not to rush.
